Are you compatible? Five signs that tell you
Two fine people are not always right for each other. Five things that show whether the person in front of you is a fit for you.
The word you hear most in marriage talk is "suitable". The families match, the education matches, even the heights match — but will the two of you get on? No biodata answers that. The answer is in the everyday: in how the two of you talk, and in small habits. This is what people mean by emotional compatibility. After a few meetings, or a few long conversations, look for these five signs.
1. The hard things can be said easily
Money, family, the past, personal limits, plans for the future — the awkward subjects come to every relationship. Notice: to raise one, do you have to rehearse every sentence in advance? Or can you simply say, "There is something I want to talk about"? A person with whom the hard things can be said easily — and who, having heard them, at least tries to understand — is the first sign.
2. Every feeling does not have to be explained from scratch
Nobody can read minds, and it is unfair to expect it. But when your voice changes, or you go quiet, do they notice? Do they try to tell when you need a little reassurance and when you need to be left alone for a while? Listening closely and paying attention — those are what count. Not mind reading.
3. You disagree, and the relationship stays safe
Two people will disagree; they may even show anger differently. One wants to talk it out at once, the other needs a while to cool down first. The difference is not the problem. What matters is whether disagreement brings insults, threats or digs — and whether, once it has passed, both of you are willing to come back and talk. Where nobody is made small by a disagreement, the relationship is safe.
4. You are not afraid to be vulnerable
Fear, uncertainty, a bad day — do you have to hide them and keep saying "I'm fine"? Or can you say plainly, "I'm not doing well today"? If there is no fear of being judged, laughed at or having your words turned against you, there is emotional safety — one of the surest signs of a good fit.
5. Your needs are not a negotiation
Some people show love in words, some in what they do. Some want to hear from you ten times a day, some need a little room of their own. It is fine for two people's needs to differ. Look at whether both of you take the other's needs seriously and try to meet somewhere in the middle — and whether, when it matters, you each feel the pull to be there. Where you do not have to build a case to ask for what you need, there is ease.
A last word
The greatest comfort in a relationship is being safe as you are, without changing yourself to be acceptable. Keep these five signs in mind as you talk to people on SheTu; the person beyond the biodata becomes much easier to see.
